88 Jeep Comanche

88 Jeep Comanche

Jeep trucks don't usually survive unscathed for 30 years, especially when they're 4-wheel drive and subjected to off-road partying, as most are.  No, usually they're pretty battered by now.

Which is what makes the Pick of the Day such an interesting find, a 1988 Jeep Comanche Pioneer pickup truck with just over 64,246 miles on it and apparently lightly used at that.  Judging by the photos, this Comanche is not so much a trail warrior as a laid-back errand truck that's in nicely preserved condition.

This Jeep has had a fairly easy life, according to the Gig Harbor, Washington, classic car repair shop advertising the truck on ClassicCars.com. It was driven just occasionally by its senior owner, the seller says, who kept it at a "waterfront cabin" where it was used primarily for "trips to the grocery store, the garbage dump, Home Depot, etc."

Part of the reason for the low mileage is the owner's advanced age.

"When my client broke his leg at 91 years old, he figured it's time to part with this," the seller says in the ad, noting that two of his other cars are also up for sale on ClassicCars.com: a 1926 Hupmobile and a 1973 Saab Sonnet.

The Jeep Comanche, introduced in 1984, was the pickup version of the ever-popular Jeep Cherokee SUV; 1988 was Comanche's biggest sales year, with nearly 44,000 sold. Unlike most full-frame pickups of the time, Comanche had the sturdy unibody front end of the Cherokee combined with a heavy box-frame section under the bed.

Happily, this Comanche is powered by Jeep's durable 4.0-liter inline-6, which at this time delivered 173 horsepower, bumped to 190 horsepower a couple years later. The transmission is automatic with 4-wheel-drive functions accessed via a separate floor shifter.

The Jeep's interior looks hardly touched

The Comanche has a great '80s vibe, punctuated by the Pioneer graphics (Pioneer was a trim upgrade).  Ditto for the interior, which looks to be in very good condition.  The pickup includes a hard-shell bed cover, which is shown separately in the ad photos.

"Everything works and she's ready for a new owner," the seller says. "We're offering this truck, along with a canopy for the back, for $7,500."
